calling conundrum

Dear Daughter,

I had thought if you called us on Saturday afternoon, then we wouldn't have to talk on Sunday afternoon. What do you think about that?

I meant to tell you that Jane called a day or so ago, and told me that they still can't think what is wrong with Margaret Ann. But the latest doctor that she wen to thought it might be her appendix that is hurting her. Can you believe that? But Jane will continue to call me when there is any change in Margaret Ann's condition.

I called Rita this morning to see if they are coming to the Flea Market. Harry answered the phone, and I asked him if they were coming, and he said they were if I thought I could stand them on Friday night and about one-half day on Saturday. Of course we could. I asked Rita to bring some Halloween things to do the wreath that is by the elevator, and she said she had some things she could bring. It seems that they expect the captain of the floor to do things like that.

I hope you had a good day with the children -

Don't ever forget the love that I have for you, and you are Number one in every thing that I do.

Much love, M & D

Dear Mother:

First, Mother, let me address your question about when to call. I'm going to have to say that I would want to think about it. I wouldn't be able to call you this Saturday at 4:00 because I will be somewhere on the highway and I don't know if I would be in phone range at that time, plus I really don't like to spend a long time on the phone while I'm driving. So, if you don't mind, let me call at 4:00 on Sunday and we'll discuss it. Is that okay?

For the very first time ever, I had a good day with my second graders. It was so unexpected that I hardly knew how to react but I have to say that it was a pleasant feeling. Things went well, they stayed "on task" and I really enjoyed my time with them. It was truly astounding! Even though I know they will probably be little pills again tomorrow, it's heartening to know that they can be charming (however rare that circumstance may be). The third graders were, as usual, charming and cooperative. If I didn't have them to be so dependably cheerful and industrious, I think I would have despaired by now. But who knows, maybe the second graders will grow up and be nice someday, too!

I stayed at school until after 4:00 working on paperwork. After a quick trip to Big Star, I came home and fixed dinner which we have now eaten. The kitchen has been cleaned and now I'm going to indulge in a little free time, reading my newest novel.

Hope you had a good time at church and that all goes well for the rest of the evening.

Bye--Ruth
