Dear Daughter,
How different the sky looks tonight than it did this morning. TV says it will rain tonight and tomorrow morning, then it will be clear tomorrow afternoon and colder than it is now. I hate to see it bad for the weekend.
It is so funny - when I got to Dillard's today, there were several women pulling dresses from the racks and putting them in a huge box, ready for shipping. I looked for the girl who told me yesterday that they were not shipping them out. Oh, well, I guess I'm glad that they were getting ready for the fall clothes.
I saw Linda looking for a denim skirt with flowers at the bottom, and denim pants to match it. She had just seen it an hour before watching, and she couldn't believe that it had already been packed, but when I told her that I had to go, she was heading toward Hecht's.
I came back by the Grocery and got a load of things, so that's about all we did today .
Hope you and Stan got to go to dinner.
Hope you and the children had a good time today -
Much love, M & D

Dear Mother:
As I had hoped, Stan and I went out to dinner to celebrate payday. We just ate at the Mexican restaurant but it was nice and I was glad not to have to cook. So that was a nice end to the day.
School went well enough. I don’t want to complain in every letter—so I won’t—but I guess I’m just not enjoying school very much this year. Who knows—maybe these second graders will eventually mature and settle down and I’ll really like them in third grade. But right now, I just sort of slog through my time with them. I do enjoy my third graders and we had a good time today starting on our business unit. I started it off, actually, by reading them the story of King Midas to remind them that there were things more important than money. That being said, I then gave each of them an envelope of play money (each envelope had a different amount) and asked them to list what they would do with the money. They enjoyed that and they particularly enjoyed critiquing each other’s selections. That made for a fun afternoon (which is when I had the third grade today). There was, of course, afternoon duty so that was not such a fun end to the afternoon but it passed.
After I finished with my afternoon duty, I made a couple of phone calls, cleaned up my classroom, and then went to return a book to one of my book club elderly ladies. I knew she would ask me in to chat (which she did) so I stayed at her apartment about 30 minutes before finally getting home right at 5:00. Stan had gone to his office in the morning, played golf in the afternoon, and was waiting for me when I got home. We went straight out to dinner and now here we are.
Did you ever find out more information about the scooter/chair that Daddy saw last night? I’ll be interested to hear about it. And I guess I’m sort of sorry all the cheap clothes are gone from Dillard’s but they were pretty much picked over so it will be nice to see the fall things, as you say. So enjoy your evening and I’ll write you in the morning.
Bye--Ruth
