the naturalist

Dear Daughter,

This has been such a lovely day. I don't know high the temperature was, but when I went out, I wore a long sleeved jacket and it was just fine.

First, we ate at the cafeteria downstairs. When we got back to the apartment, I told Daddy that I would go the grocery, bank, and Mall, and that when I got back, I would take a nap.

So, first I wen to to the grocery, to ask about Tambocor, and they did not have it. I started asking about it last Friday. I don't know what happened, but they did not have it. The Tambocor is what it takes for Daddy to live. Anyway they gave me four tablets to have while they are getting their supply from the drug company. It costs $170.00 for thirty days. The insurance does pay a part of it, if they want to pay it.

How was your guest speaker? Please tell me all about the workshop, the animals he brought along, and about the lunch!

Every thing is going along beautifully, and I am so happy to tell you that. Daddy seems to be doing all right, and that makes us very happy, indeed.

Hope Stan is all right, and that you two have a nice evening.

Much love, M & D

Dear Mother:

How has your day been? Wasn’t the weather nice? We could hardly have asked for a better day for our visiting naturalist and I’m sure you were happier out in this weather than in the rain on Sunday/Monday. Did you know that autumn began this morning? It’s a different day every year, it seems, but I do believe that it started at 6:47 a.m. this morning.

The visit by the naturalist from the Mississippi Museum of Natural History was a rousing success. He did a great job and the kids absolutely loved the program. Gretchen and I had prepared them well and they knew all the background information that was expected of them. We were very proud of our little kids! They learned a lot, I believe, and they were very attentive. So it was a great experience for all involved. Of course, I just had my second grade classes as usual this morning so the first half of my day was quite normal. THEN, happily, Gretchen and I were allowed to take John (the naturalist, 34 years old) out to lunch which was a great treat. We went to Old Venice, on the Square, and really enjoyed ourselves. When we got back to school, it was time for John to address my 3rd grade and one of Gretchen’s third grade classes, combined. That took until 2:30 so that was pretty much it for my day. It was a lovely day and a welcome break in the routine.

Stan stayed home this morning but went to his office after lunch. He doesn’t have classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays so he just went in to do paperwork. He emailed me that he was going to Wal Mart when he left work since I’ll be on an MAE conference call from 6:00 to 6:30. We won’t have dinner until after that so he has plenty of time to go shopping after work.

Thanks for your nice letter this morning, Mother. I do enjoy hearing everything that you have to tell! Hope all went well with you both today.

Bye--Ruth

maybe a lunch out

Dear Daughter,

I am excited about your having the the workshop with the guy from Jackson bringing the little fuzzy animals. I do hope you can take him out to lunch, because I imagine you will be talking and asking him about the animals, etc.

I got up late this morning. I'm supposed to get up at 6:30. My clock goes off at that time, but it rang from 6:30 until 7:05. I was so sleepy that I didn't even hear the alarm!

Phil did call last night. They were fine and he said Marla was making faces at him. He could hardly talk at all for laughing. He said they were fine. Said they went out to the house, and selected the colors - said they chose beige for the outside of the house, and red for the shutters. They are so excited about the house.

I don't know what we will do today. We are planning to eat at the cafeteria. Then I need to go the Pharmacy to get Daddy's medicine. Daddy suggested I go before lunch, and I probably will.

Martha called me yesterday, and I nearly fell out, because she hadn't called me in a long time. She is so excited about the flea market. They have two large signs, telling people to come to the flea market. Of course, Martha is coming, and I still have to call Fannie to see if she is coming.

You wrote such a nice long letter to me. I will read it to Daddy when he gets up.

Have a wonderful time with the children and the workshop -

Much love, M & D

Dear Mother:

Good morning! It’s certainly more cheerful as far as weather goes this morning than it was yesterday morning! What a difference! We needed the rain but I think we will all be glad to see the sun again. In the end, our rain gauge measured 3.75 inches. Can you believe that? That’s a lot of rain!

As I told you yesterday evening, Gretchen and I are expecting a naturalist from the Mississippi Museum of Natural History (Jackson) to appear today to do workshops for her 4th grade and for our combined 3rd grades. We went to a workshop he gave during our inservice in August and liked what he did so much that we arranged for him to come back to Oxford to do a workshop for our students. He is young and very enthusiastic and he brings several small animals with him (but, at my request, he has promised to bring no snakes!). I will have two third grade classes as usual this morning but this afternoon, my third grade class (along with one of Gretchen’s third grade classes) will meet together for 2 hours for his workshop. Because of that, I have canceled my other second grade class in the afternoon. That doesn’t upset me at all but I guess they will be a little fussy about it. They’ll just have to get over it, won’t they?? The big unknown for today is whether or not Gretchen and I will take John (the young naturalist) out for lunch. I sincerely hope we do since getting to escape from school for awhile is always fun! But we will have to wait and see how that turns out.

Other than my plans for the day, there’s not a lot to say. We had an exceptionally quiet evening, even for us. After dinner, both of us hunched over our computers for the rest of the evening. Did Phil call you all last night? I hope he and Marla have recovered from the hurricane. Do tell me what he had to say if he called you.

So how are you all today? It sounded yesterday as if you were feeling a little lowly. I’m sure it was just the weather that made us all feel a little peaked. A pretty day will improve all our dispositions. The night was clear and cool here and I believe we will have a nice day here so maybe you, too, will have a better day.

Bye--Ruth

A little tired

Dear Daughter,

I am a little tired today. Daddy wanted to go to the Penthouse, and, of course, I wanted to go,too. We went this afternoon at l:00, and I walked 16 times around it and he walked five times, which I thought was good.

After walking on the Penthouse, I knew I needed to go to the Grocery Pharmacy, and to Dillard's, just to walk a little more. So I did, and bought Daddy two steaks, and some Brut After shave Lotion. I counted the number of people waiting to be waited on at the Pharmacy, and there were thirteen waiting, so I decided to wait until tomorrow which was all right with Daddy.

It rained from about 6:30 yesterday afternoon until 12:00 today. I took my nap and when I got up, it wasn't raining, so I went on my walks.

How was your day? Maybe it was all right. I hope so, anyway.

We are both fine, and I'm happy to report that.

Hope you have a nice evening -

Much love, M & D

Dear Mother:

Monday is finished. One day down, four to go…. I told you that I think September is a long month! Well, this was a fine day, though, and everything went just fine. My second graders were their usual bumptious selves and my third graders were their usual wonderful selves. So the day went well and there were no problems at all.

The endangered animals vocabulary bee for the third graders was very interesting. Three of the girls had obviously studied a GREAT deal for it so, when they had gone 3 rounds with none of the remaining three girls missing a word, I declared a prize and gave them all a prize. The boys had obviously only studied minimally so they knew they didn’t deserve a prize and they were quite content to get their usual piece of candy at the end of the class period and let it go at that. Tomorrow, a naturalist/museum educator from the Mississippi Museum of Natural History in Jackson is coming to conduct workshops for all Gretchen’s and my 3rd and 4th grade classes so that’s why we were reviewing vocabulary today—to get ready for his visit. Mr. James wasn’t at school today so we couldn’t ask him if it would be okay to take the naturalist out to lunch but I’m fairly sure that he will give us permission tomorrow (if Mr. James is at school tomorrow). If Mr. James isn’t at school, we’ll just take the naturalist out to lunch and figure it is okay!!

After school, I went to Big Star to pick up a few groceries and then I came home. I unloaded my groceries and put on some soup to cook and then went out on the porch to drink a coke, eat peanuts, and read my book. Stan should be home soon, however, so I’m back inside and getting a salad ready to add to the soup for our dinner. I haven’t heard from him since this morning so I don’t know how he is feeling but at least he made it through a whole day which is good.

Thanks for your letter. You need to take care of yourself and get a good night’s sleep, Mother. Don’t over do it!! You all have a good evening.

Bye--Ruth

rainy days

Dear Daughter,

It started raining last night, while we were in Church, and it was raining when we went to get the bus at Church. I had my umbrella, so I didn't get wet. When we got back to the apartment, of course we didn't get wet. It rained all night, and is raining steadily this morning.

Two of our Elders have resigned.. Dorothy told me about it while we were waiting for the bus. Our services last night were for the Elders who are left. Of course, it was indeed a very strange service. I am reminded of what Rita said to me about the Elders. She said if the Elders didn't like you, you had better be looking for another Church. One of the elders who resigned said, to Dorothy and me, that it was all the administrative work that they had to do. He said he was going to continue coming to Church, but he did not like a lot of other things about the people he had to work with.

Norman was driving the bus, so you know we got doughnuts. When I got home last night i handed the sack to Daddy, and he took the big doughnut with blueberries in it. We love the doughnuts.

Daddy has a rather large steak that he has cooked for his lunch and I'm going to have a TV lunch. We are planning to eat lunch in the cafeteria tomorrow, because Tuesday and Fridays are our two favorite lunches down there.

I am sorry that Stan is not quite well. I do, so hope, that he will be better as the week progresses.

I had planned to go to the Grocery to get Daddy's medicine. He is out of the Tambocor and has to have it. He does have enough to last until tomorrow, thank goodness.

Can't wait to hear who it s that you and Gretchen are going to have to speak to you tomorrow. I'm sure that Mr. James will allow it.

Hope you have a very good day -

Much love, M & D

Dear Mother:

September is the longest month. Next to January, it is definitely the longest month! It certainly seems that this should be the last week of September but it’s not. I’m really looking forward to October, November, and December, all of which have interesting events in them. Oh, well, September is getting close to the end. Actually, tomorrow will be different since Gretchen and I have a guest coming to teach our classes. I’m not sure, but we may actually get to take him out to lunch. I’ll find out today if Mr. James is going to let us do that so, if he does, that will be an interesting diversion. Anyway, I’ll tell you all about tomorrow….tomorrow!

Well, today will start off with morning duty and then, thereafter, will just be a regular day. The second graders continue in their thinking skills unit. One of the 2nd grade groups is ready to start on a new thinking skill unit today but the other two didn’t finish last Thursday so they have a little more to do before they start on the new unit. As for the third graders, they are going to have a vocabulary "bee" (like a spelling bee except instead of spelling words, they will have to define terms about endangered species). I’m giving some fairly nice prizes (and everyone will get a little something) so that should take most of their hour. We’ll review first and then have the bee, actually, so I’m sure it will take their whole hour.

After school, I need to go to the bank and, if I have time, either to Wal Mart grocery or to Kroger’s. Since Stan was sick all last week, I kept putting off my big errands but I really need to get on the ball. He has gone back to work today and, while I expect him home fairly early, at least he won’t bewaiting at home for me after school.

It’s still raining this morning, but I haven’t been outside yet (since it’s still dark) to look at the rain gauge to see how much rain we got in all but Memphis TV says we got 1.5 inches. When I looked yesterday afternoon, we had .75 but it rained hard yesterday evening and I assume it has rained much of the night so we must have had about the same amount of rain last night that we did yesterday We needed the rain so I have not one word of complaint against it!

Did the rain get to Nashville overnight? If it has just started for you, then you can expect it to last a very long time. It’s been going on since about 10:00 a.m. on Sunday here so you can anticipate a good, long soaking.

Bye--Ruth

droopy

Dear Daughter,

Can UT win their football game? Now I think I can say they can. It will be a good game, we think. I would have answered you sooner, but I haven't been back to the computer since early this morning. Do you believe that?

I went to the mall, not shopping, just to the mall. I didn't buy anything, just walked a bit. Then I went to the Grocery, and bought two cans of shredded sauerkraut, a package of wieners, and grapes. I guess we will have kraut and wieners for lunch tomorrow.

What did you do today? I hope you didn't find anything that just had to be done, so you could rest all day. You need to rest!

Hope Stan is doing all right.

Hope you two have a lovely evening -

Much love, M & D

*****************************************************************

Dear Mother:

Stan is watching the UT game, I think, and I will go watch the last quarter. You know I can't stand the suspense of football games!

Both Stan and I have both felt pretty droopy today. After sleeping so much last night, I still spent most of the afternoon just lying in bed sort of watching TV and sort of dozing. Stan did the same lying on the couch in the den. We haven’t eaten any dinner yet because neither of us feels good enough to eat anything. We’ve been sitting on the porch the last 45 minutes sipping a coke but now I think I may get back in bed and watch TV some more. I can’t say that I’m sick—because I’m not—but I’m just exhausted and need some time to recuperate, I guess. Stan is still recovering from whatever he has had so we’re both just going to take it easy the rest of the day and evening.

As much as I enjoy my book club, I’m sorry to say that it meets for the first time this fall tomorrow afternoon. I will try to go, I guess, but I don’t really look forward to going. But, if I do go, I thought I would ask if I could call at 4:30 tomorrow afternoon. That should still give us time to talk for 20 or 30 minutes and you would still have time to get downstairs to wait for the bus. Is that okay? If it isn’t, write me back tonight and we’ll arrange another time to call.

So, don’t worry, all is well. We just needed a quiet weekend to rest. Will talk to you tomorrow at 4:30 unless you write me differently.

Bye--Ruth
