fun trip

Dear Daughter,

It is cloudy here today. Our temp is 54 degrees, and it's going up to 69 degrees, and they mentioned a few showers.

Last night, we went to Church it wasn't raining, but when we came out, it was raining quite steadily, but I had my umbrella, so Annie and I walked under the umbrella. She said she couldn't afford to get her hair wet, because she had just had it fixed on Saturday.

Brother Prentiss spoke to us last night. He said, in his sermon, that music was the main issue of conversation today. He said that that the Bible didn't say to do it, and, we, certainly, were not to use it. I was very glad that he said that, and he preached about Crossover People, and I really did enjoy that. It was about the Jews crossing over and their trials and tribulations.

When it was over, I asked him if he remembered living om Forest Avenue, and, of course, he did. I also asked him if he remembered that we lived up the street, and, of course he did, so we had a nice little chat.

I think Daddy is feeling well today. He is still asleep.

I hope the second graders will act "normal" today.

Hope you have a very good day -

Thanks for coming. We both enjoyed it, very much. Thank you for taking us out for three good meals, and for taking me shopping. I enjoyed it very much. And thank Stan for fixing our phone and our computer!

Much love, M & D

Dear Mother:

Good Monday morning. How are things in Nashville this morning? Did you get any rain? It doesn’t appear that there was any rain here last night but, on the weather radar this morning, there are showers dotting north Mississippi. It wouldn’t hurt us at all to get some rain so I hope we get at least a shower.

We had a really pleasant drive home yesterday, but we went a partially different route. Both of us thought it was better to avoid I-40 so we headed east on Hillsboro Road (U.S. 431) to Franklin. From there we took U.S. 31 South to U.S. 412 West until it intersected with the Natchez Trace. From there, we took our usual route through Tupelo and then to Oxford on Highway 6. In the end, it just took us 4 ½ hours and it was just 10 miles longer than the I-40 route. Aside from a few traffic lights at the first of our trip in Franklin, it was a good route and didn’t take us any longer than our other routes plus we got to see some lovely mid-Tennessee scenery.

Since we got home at a decent hour, we were able to get ready for our week without too much stress. We had sandwiches for dinner and then piddled around. I was in bed by 8:30 and asleep by 9:00 (I had to read some more of my Scottish time-travel novel!). So I guess I’m more or less ready for today but I’m not too worried. I’ll just see the second graders today and tomorrow since we will be leaving for Biloxi at 11:00 on Wednesday. So how bad can the second graders be for just 2 days??? Don’t answer that! I'll see the third graders all three days but I look forward to them.

Hope you all can rest and relax today. And I really, really hope neither of you caught a cold. Take some extra vitamin C for a few days and get plenty of rest so you can fight off any cold germs that might have been floatinig around. Take care!!

Bye--Ruth

coming after all

Dear Mother:

While I can't honestly say that Stan is much better, we are going to leave about 9:00 a.m. Saturday and drive up to Nashville. It was good that we didn't drive last night since Stan was pretty exhausted. We were both asleep by 10:00 and didn't wake up until the alarm went off at 7:00. So, we'll be there about 2:00 and take you all our for a late lunch. You and I can go shopping this afternoon, Mother, that is if you can tear yourself away from all the exciting football games that will be on today! And we'll try not to stay out too late tonight so that we can get some sleep tonight. Anyway, we'll have a little visit--better than no visit, I hope.

Stan--sick or well?

Dear Mother:

Good morning. I know you were unhappy about my letter last night so I’ll apologize but I have to say, there was nothing I could do but tell you. Stan is always still asleep when I leave for school so I won’t know how he feels until he emails me. But it really doesn’t matter how he feels this morning, just how he feels when he gets home. One thing we discussed last night was not coming to Nashville tonight but trying to get up early enough tomorrow morning to leave by 9:00 which would get us to Nashville by 1:30 or 2:00. So I’ll let you know, of course, what we will be doing but it will be this afternoon before Stan will know if he feels like driving to Nashville tonight. I’m so sorry about all of this but, so far, this has been a difficult fall semester for Stan. He just hasn’t been in particularly good health. Stan, on the one hand, is the picture of health during the summer when he’s outside all the time and not around many people. But once he gets around all his students and catches something, he has a really hard time shaking it off. I would predict that he will be much healthier when he retires than he is now.

Well, I’ll go get ready for school. It is computer day and so there isn’t as much stress today. It’s always nice to stick those pesky little 2nd graders in front of a computer! I hope you all are okay and Ihope you can enjoy your lunch downstairs today.

Bye--Ruth

sick Stan

Dear Daughter,

Won't be long until you and Stan will be home again. I hope, so much, that it doesn't rain on Saturday. I think all the weathermen on TV say it will rain, but, they might be wrong.

I went to the bank today. Then I went to Hecht's, and looked around, but didn't come close to buying anything. I didn't even go to Dillard's today.

Dot sent us all a memo regarding our smoke detectors.I'm sure it's because nine people died in a Nursing Home on Patterson Street last week. I had to place a memo inside each door on our floor about the smoke detectors.

Daddy seems to be feeling fine. He didn't go out today, but we are definitely planning to go to the cafeteria tomorrow.

That's about all the news I know, and that's good, I suppose.

Hope you had a good day at school with the Second Graders.

Hope you have a good evening.

Much love, M & D

Dear Mother:

Before I tell you anything about my day, I just want to alert you to the fact that Stan came home today feeling really sick again. His chest is congested and he has a deep chest cough. Not so much because of him (although I don’t want him to make himself sicker) but because of not exposing you all (and particularly Daddy) to any sort of lung disease, I want to warn you that if he gets worse tomorrow, we might have to cancel out for this weekend. I know you would be disappointed and I would be sorry but I don’t want to take any chance of Stan’s giving this infection to Daddy. So I hope he will feel better by tomorrow and I hope we can come, but I wanted to prepare you just in case. Or maybe we could come for just one day instead of two. I don’t know, but I wanted to make you aware that Stan was feeling lowly again.

School was more or less okay today. I just had the second graders and two of my classes did well enough while the other one was just as disruptive as ever. I sent one little boy back to his room which I know crushed him, but I was just out of patience. Dealing with him was taking too much time away from the other nicer children. For the most part, however, the day went pretty well. On Thursdays, I have the first two hours of the day free so I am able to get several chores done on Thursday mornings. It makes me feel more settled and organized to have that time free and clear to work on clerical matters. I had my morning duty and then my afternoon duty but, fortunately, I will only have the afternoon duty tomorrow and then not again for a couple of months. I did manage to leave in time to get to the bank before it closed and it’s a good thing I did. They had not done what I’d asked them to do with regard to a savings account so I had to spend about 15 minutes straightening it all out. I got home about 4:30 and started cooking dinner. Fortunately, I cooked something Stan liked because when he’s sick, he often just won’t eat. But he liked the veal parmesan and spaghetti so much that he ate it even though he said he had no appetite. He’s curled up in his comfy chair reading right now so maybe he’ll feel better in a while.

Well, sorry this is such a depressing letter from your point of view but that’s the way it is. I’ll let you know tomorrow how things are going.

Bye--Ruth

good night's sleep!

Dear Daughter,,

I slept so well that I didn't even get up last night. That is very unusual, so I got a good night's rest. I don't know about Daddy, but he is sleeping soundly now, and I wouldn't dare wake him up.

Church was fine last night. I always enjoy Bro Richards' class. He didn't mention his Daughter who is ill, but I hope she is better.

Our bus was late last night, and it didn't get here until 7:00, so obviously we were late in getting to the church. When church was over, I called Daddy at 8:00, and I didn't get home until 8:30. Bro. Fraser was driving, and he seemed sort of grumpy. But, as Dorothy Clay says, our ride is free, so I guess I shouldn't complain too much, but it was aggravating.

We are going to have TV dinners for lunch. Then tomorrow is Catfish day at the cafeteria, so we will definitely be there.

I have to go to the bank today. But it is so pretty, that I don't mind getting out at all.

I hope your new schedule works all right for YOU. Take it as easy as you can!

Hope you have a good day -

We love you so much, and don't ever forget it -

Much love, M & D

Dear Mother:

Chilly, chilly, chilly! It’s 40 degrees on the dot this morning. Since the Weather Channel is reporting that Tupelo is 41, I think our thermometer is probably right. Oh, but I love fall and the chilly nights and the mild days! Of course, my room continues to be stuffy at school because it’s cool enough that the big school air conditioner doesn’t turn on all that often but, since my room has no windows, I don’t have any way of getting fresh or cool air to circulate. So I’ll always find something to grumble about but I still love fall!

Thursdays are my easy day although I’m still thinking about changing my schedule so I don’t know if it will be my easy day in the future. The schedule that I came up with for this year just didn’t work as well as I had thought/hoped so I’m probably going to change it. Gretchen has already changed her schedule since the 4th grade teachers were complaining about it rather vociferously. We try hard to keep the classroom teachers happy and on our side because if they get irritated about anything we do, they tend to take it out on our students. Several times we have found out that they keep our kids in from recess to make up work that they missed while they were in
Gifted. Whatever you may think of that, it goes against state gifted regulations and they aren’t supposed to do it. So we have problems with teachers who, to a great extent, seem to dislike gifted students. That was the very long way around to say that I’m trying to change my schedule to make teachers happy which will make it easier on my students. Even if it makes my schedule a little more difficult, my primary concern must be for my students.

Every day I say that I don’t have anything to do after school and every day I seem to think of something but today, after my afternoon duty, I really MUST go to the bank because I have to sign a form for our automatic savings withdrawal (which I changed) so, whether I think of something to do or not, I WILL leave school as soon as my afternoon duty is over!

Stan and I did get all the things you requested, so you’ll have your detergent and drinks. If we can stay awake tomorrow night, I’m sure we will enjoy our usual Friday night drive and dinner out. This has been a busy beginning to the school year. I can’t believe it’s just October! Well, anyway, we’ll enjoy seeing you all this weekend and it looks like the weather will be nice and mild so it will be fun for you all to go out to eat. Tell me about your day—and have a good one!

Bye--Ruth

no news good news

Dear Daughter,

The sun is shining, and the wind is blowing softly, and there are some white clouds floating around. It really is a pretty day.

Daddy and I both are both as well as could expected. He doesn't complain about staying inside so much, and that is good.

I went to Hecht's and bought two pairs of hose at a greatly reduced price for $l.87. They were $2.49, plus another 25 per cent off for no reason. So, maybe we can go while you are here. I got a little walking done, and a little walking done is better than no walking at all, or so they say.

They say no news is good news, but I don't know if that is true or not. Anyway, all is well with us. I'm going to Church tonight, so that 's the reason I'm writing a little early.

I hope, so much that the Second Graders were good today. I'm pretty sure the Third Graders were.

Hope you and Stan have a pleasant evening -

Much love, M & D

Dear Mother:

Stan and I did go out to eat tonight and didn’t get home until 7:15 so I’m going to make this short since I’ve had a 12-hour day. Also, I just got off the phone with Buddy so I’m thirty minutes later writing than I would have been otherwise! Whew!

Well, my day went pretty well. I never know what to say about the second graders. They are just SO active and squirmy and talkative and unfocused. But they aren’t mean children so I guess that’s something to say positive about them. The third graders kept me busy today not because they were being loud or bad but because I was trying to teach them to make change and they were clueless. I kept showing them how to count out change with our play money but they had never heard of such a thing so it took a lot of one-on-one work with them. Still, I think they learned a lot and I think they were very proud of themselves for mastering a new skill.

For whatever reason, I got started on doing Reading Fair stuff after my afternoon duty and I just wanted to get this particular task done (getting out information and registration forms to teachers) so I worked until 5:00. It was 5:15 when I got home and the phone was ringing when I walked in. Stan was calling saying that he was almost home so I went right back outside and waited in the driveway for a minute until Stan pulled in. I hopped in the car and off we went to Applebee’s. After that, we went to Wal Mart so that’s why it took so long for us to get home.

I hope you had a good time at church. Until tomorrow morning…

Bye--Ruth
