no kids on Monday

Dear Daughter,

It is going to be a beautiful day. It won't be long , but enjoy it while it is here.

I just had a lovely time last night. The preaching was fine. I like the new preacher a lot better than I did at first.

We had 25 people at the Visitation last night, and, as usual, the food was just fine. They don't ask me anymore what I brought, they say that I brought a pecan pie. Annie and I are going to be co-hostesses for July, next year.

Jane Blake called me Saturday night, about 7:30, and we talked until 8:30. Mary Margaret is better. They are not doing anything for her now. They say every organ is perfect, and they cannot find any thing wrong with her. So she was supposed to fly out yesterday to her job, don't know where, but she is going to stay until Friday afternoon, then fly home. The doctors say she has some sort of spasm just below her appendix, sometimes, and that is what makes her sick all over. She told Jane that while she was working, if she got sick, she would lie down on the floor! She and Howard have put the down payment on a new (for them) house in Boston.

Daddy and I are going down to have a flu shot this morning at 9:00 this morning, although it will be about 8:30 when we go, to avoid the line of waiting.

Hope you have a good day. Every day should be a good day for an intelligent, beautiful teacher!

Glad you didn't have to get up so early this morning.

Will write you tonight -

Much love, M & D

Dear Mother:

You probably won’t read this until you get back from your flu shot so I’m sorry I’m a little late but I guess better late than never, eh? Are they giving flu shots in your building? I remember your telling me something about that but I can’t quite remember what you said. But surely it’s there in the building or Daddy wouldn’t be going. Stan tried to get his flu shot on campus last week but they said they didn’t have the vaccine in yet so it will be another couple of weeks, I guess, before he can get one.

It’s very nice to have a Monday morning at home, even though I’ll have to stay at work until 7:00 p.m. to "earn" that time off. Still, I very much enjoyed having another morning to catch up on my sleep and I’m sure I’ll feel better this week because of it. In fact, I would be happy to have a similar schedule forever if it meant I could stay up later than 9:00 and get up later than 5:30. I know you all remember those days and probably don’t miss them at all!

The concept of the schedule that we are following today is that it’s hard for working parents to come to school for a conference during school hours so we are working from 12:00 to 7:00 on the assumption that some parents can come at their lunch hour and some can come after they finish work which can be from 4:00 (for factory to workers) to 4:45 (for the University) to after 5:00 for other jobs. We handed out report cards last Thursday so that’s why we are having conference day now—so parents can discuss report cards with teachers. Fortunately, since I don’t give grades, I don’t have many parents wanting to discuss anything serious. The most I had last year was just a parent stopping by to say hello and ask if little Johnny was behaving and could they do anything to help. So I don’t anticipate a very strenuous day. I plan, actually, to work hard on getting my new second grade science unit put together.

So that’s about it. I hope the flu shots don’t make you sick and I hope that things are settling down in your building. Try not to worry—everything will be fine eventually, I’m sure.

Bye--Ruth
