Dear Daughter,
I certainly hope your car has arrived, and I imagine it has. I simply can hardly wait to see it.
This has been such a dreary day. It rained, not hard, but steadily until the afternoon. Now it is partly cloudy, the sun is shining, and it is a welcome relief to what we saw earlier.
I didn't get my hair cut today, because it was such a bad morning, that I just thought I would wait until tomorrow morning. We planned to go to Bingo tonight, but it has been called off, because something happened to the kitchen cooking stoves, and they had to cancel lunch and Dinner tonight. Daddy said, when he went to take the garbage and mail, that there is a lot of smoke in the kitchen area, and he could tell they were doing something in the kitchen.
Pat came this afternoon and, as usual, left the apartment with a good clean smell. She certainly does work hard, and I don't think $30 is too much for her. She does all the washing, and I never have to go to launder my clothes any more.
That's about all our news.
Hope you got your car, went to the AAUW meeting tonight.
Hope you get a good night's rest -
Much love, M & D

Dear Mother:
My beautiful, beautiful car is in the garage. It is just what I hoped it would be--quiet, sturdy, powerful, responsive. I guess I sound like a car commercial but I really do love it. Stan got all the details taken care of (including the license tags and insurance) but about 11:00 this morning. My morning class had just left and whose head should pop in my door but Stan's! He had driven the new car to school and had parked it in the parking lot. We walked out and admired it and then he took the Grand Prix and drove it to school. The Thunderbird is in the shop getting the odometer fixed so it worked out smoothly to leave it and take the Crown Vic. So now I'm the proud owner of the car I've always wanted and, so far, it is just as wonderful as I thought it would be. I can't wait for you all to see it and take a ride!
School was fine today. Until I changed my schedule, Thursdays were my easy day but now, with the new schedule, Tuesdays will be my easy days. So I had time to do all the running around I needed to do today to get ready for the new 2nd grade science unit. By the time the "bad" 2nd grade class arrived at 9:30 this morning, I had several experiments set up. They managed to get through them all without breaking anything so that was a good sign that the other classes should do well with those experiments. My afternoon was a long 1 3/4 hour class with the 3rd graders but I love having them so it went quickly. I left school as soon as I could so that I could get home and have time to get things typed out for the AAUW meeting. It went well enough, also so I can definitely say that all went well today.
It's hard to believe we finally got a new car but we have and it's gorgeous. It's so quiet and smooth! I really can hardly wait for you all to see it on the 25th! You'll love it! As for your day, I'm sorry about the kitchen and the bingo but maybe it will all get fixed and straightened out soon. Good luck with your hair tomorrow morning.
Bye--Ruth

a car--or not a car?
Dear Daughter,
Phil called last night. He was okay, except worried about Baby. He said Marla is getting so large, it is hard for her to get around. He also said that he and Marla believe believe the baby would come sooner than expected!
We are supposed to have showers today, but, it is supposed to be a pretty day by the afternoon, and, I hope the weather is nice because I want to go to the Beauty Shop this afternoon or by tomorrow. I think it will go this afternoon, if I can, because tonight is Bingo night, and I always enjoy that. Than tomorrow night is church, so I guess as they say, I'm living it up.
Pat is supposed to come this morning. I call her by 8:00, to check and see what time she is coming.
Daddy and I are supposed to eat lunch today in the cafeteria. But, when I was out walking I saw a sign about the cafeteria having trouble with their stoves, etc.,so he said he would try to have it opened by dinner on Tuesday. And, really, I don't know whether he means lunch today, and dinner by tonight. I'm sure Daddy and I will eat some place.
We had a good evening last night. Of course, NY lost to Boston, but it was a good game.
If you don't mind, and if you get the car , I would rather you waited until later to tell us what the people at AAUW said about the Crown Victoria! Have I said before, that I can't wait to see it!!
Hope the children will be good today -
Much love, M & D

Dear Mother:
Time marches on and I hope it marches quickly today. I’m so anxious to see if Stan can take care of all the details today so that we can get the car. Maybe it will be Thursday if Stan gets too bogged down or if the bank doesn’t cooperate in some way. I don’t know but I hope I have the car to drive this afternoon when I go to my AAUW meeting. I don’t want to go to the AAUW meeting but maybe driving the car will make it more fun.
I don’t know what the weather did overnight but I can tell you that it’s a very still, warm, and humid morning. It doesn’t matter much what the weather is like today but I am very concerned about tomorrow since the field trip is an all-outdoors event. Since Stan will be running around doing all the car business today, I hope that it doesn’t rain on him, also. I’m very much looking forward to getting the car so I really hope everything falls into place today. I’ll tell you what the hang-up might be. When you deposit a check (as Stan will be doing), sometimes they say the funds won’t be available for 3 working days (or until the check has cleared). We just hope that since it’s an "official" check and since they know us so well, that they will say that the funds are immediately available. If they are not, they’re not, however, and we’ll just have tot wait. Since I can’t take care of it, however, I’ll just have to let Stan take care of it the best he can and hope that it all works out right.
We had a short evening last night. I’ve been trying hard to go to bed early so I got in bed at 8:30 last night and was asleep by 8:45. That really doesn’t leave much time for doing anything in the evening which is a pity. On the other hand, I don’t enjoy feeling exhausted all the time so I’ve tried to convince myself to end my evenings much earlier than usual and go on to bed. Just think how much trouble you all used to have getting me to go to sleep early and here I am doing it myself!
From your letter last night, Mother, it sounds as if things will be okay with your apartment. Dot will continue for quite awhile and that will give "them" time to find someone suitable. Try to look on the bright side as long as you can! Or, as the old saying goes, "Don’t trouble trouble ‘til trouble troubles you." I’m sure you and Daddy will continue to have a nice place to live.
As for writing this evening, I’ll either be really, really early or really, really late. Depending on what happens with the car, I’ll write well before 5:00 but if you don’t have a letter from me by 5:15, it means I didn’t have time before my AAUW meeting. So if you don’t have a letter by 5:15, don’t bother to check back again until about 9:00. I’ll write after I get home from the AAUW meeting. Have a good day and keep dry!

Dot's departure
Dear Daughter,
It certainly has looked rainy all day, but, to my knowledge, it hasn't rained a drop.
I went to the grocery and then on to the Mall. They certainly don't have anything for sale at Dillard's, so I just looked around and didn't even attempt to buy anything.
Daddy went with me to the Fire Prevention Week talk this morning. It was nice, but we certainly didn't learn anything. We sat very near Lacey Love and intended to ask her about Sarah Sue, but, when the meeting was over, Daddy said she whispered to him that she had taken a diuretic before coming to the meeting, and she had to hurry and get away, and that she would talk to him later.
Last night while Dorothy Clay and I were waiting for the bus, a little crowd gathered around us, talking about Dot leaving the Manager position. Helen reminded me of what you had said. She said Dot thought the position would be an easy way to earn $20,000, but Helen said it was not as easy as she thought, and so it goes - I was talking to Linda today, and we were talking about Dot and she said that Dot was going to stay on the job until after Christmas. I guess the office wanted her to do that, while they will be looking for someone else to fill her vacancy.
Daddy went down to take the garbage this afternoon, about 4:30. He said when he got there, it was just like they were having a party. He said Tom insisted on taking out the garbage. He said they were asking about me, and, if still walked, and he told them it was hard keeping up with me.
This was so funny. I showed Daddy where to get my key that has the key on it to get the mail. He took it when he went down, and, he promptly forgot it, until he got back up here. He told me he had forgotten to get the mail, so he went back another time to get the mail, and when he got back to the apartment, he said, sheepishly, that this was a holiday. So we had a good laugh about that.
How did your work go today? I hope everything went smoothly.
Have a good evening and rest!
Much love, M & D

Dear Mother:
Your letter was so cute, Mother. I can totally identify with Lacey Love needing to leave the meeting early. That’s the way I feel at the end of a long class!! And it was totally understandable that you all forgot it was a holiday. That’s what foiled our car plans—we told the Ford people we would transfer our money on Monday but we forgot that banks would be closed. I think we’ll manage it tomorrow but it will all be Stan’s doing. I can’t help much unfortunately.
School was fine today although it was pretty busy. The first thing I had to do today was return the van to the bus shop which I did before school. I had my classes but I had forgotten that today was the day we had to have our class inventory turned into the office so I had to do that. Then we had a note from the bookkeeper urging us to get our purchase requisitions turned in so I worked on those off and on all day. In the middle of the day I had to drive to the Square to buy a bridal shower present for one of our young teachers. The school was giving her a shower this afternoon so Gretchen and I bought her a salad plate in her china pattern. While I was out, I was surprised to see that it was raining. We didn’t get a lot of rain but it was nice to get a little. Anyway, that took my lunch hour so I just sort of snacked off and on during the afternoon on nuts. My students were very active although quite happy to be back in Gateway. I haven’t had the nerve to tell my 2nd graders that I’ll be gone again on Wednesday when Gretchen and I take our students on a field trip. I guess I’ll have to tell them tomorrow!
After a long day, I worked a bit, went to the bridal shower briefly, then went back to my room to finish a couple of things. Then I drove home (at 4:00) and enjoyed a peaceful 30 minutes on the porch reading my book before cooking dinner. We have eaten and now I’m going to wash my hair. My intention is to go to bed early again tonight since I’ll be busy the next couple of days. Hope you all have a calm and happy evening.

crocheting again
Dear Daughter,
Tomorrow, at school, the children will be saying that they want to know what you have been doing. Are you going to tell them that you have a Crown Victoria car? I'm sure they will see it inthe parking lot. I simply can't wait to see it!
It has been a really rainy looking rain today, but I don't think it has actually rained a bit. The TV weatherman said this morning that we would have scattered showers this afternoon, and the temperature would be 73.
I need a few things at the Grocery, but I don't think I will go this afternoon. Both Daddy and I went to bed to rest a while. He is still asleep, but I think he is doing okay.
I finally got my checks straightened out. I tore up the one I had written to Bell South and gave it in an envelope to the Church. When I was checking the cancelled check from the bank, I noticed they had a check for $82.37 from me to Bell South. Thank you for calling them and telling me about it. Now I am putting a check for $70 to the Church, so that makes it all right. Thanks to you and Daddy!
I will sort of be glad when the Rita and Harry have come and gone. We would take them to the cafeteria, but, of course, it won't be open. So, we may go to Wendy's, because we haven't been there in a long time.
I know I shouldn't feel sorry for Dot, but, I can't help it. I certainly hope they find someone who would be a good manager. I told Dot that maybe when they got her letter of resignation they would ask her to stay and do some minor adjustments in a manager's position. Of course, she didn't think so.
Guess I had better go and start getting ready for church. I will crochet while I am waiting for church. I have four squares made, and it seems that it will take longer to put them together than it does to crochet. But I enjoy crocheting, and, you made it possible for me to crochet again, by bringing me the books, the crocheting thread, and, so I enjoy it!
Hope you have had plenty of sleep -
Much love, M & D

Dear Mother:
It’s another Monday morning. There just seem to be more Mondays than any other day of the week, don’t you think? They seem to occur ever so much more often than Fridays! Ah well, I guess there have to be Mondays so we’ll appreciate Fridays. So, how are you this Monday? Are you planning to go to the grocery? Got any other errands? I hope you don’t have to venture too far afield today and that you can have a relaxing day.
Not much is going to be happening at school today—I hope. Since my students didn’t get computer day on Friday, they begged me to have it today so I agreed. Oh, they had to beg to make me agree but finally they talked me into it! Seriously, though, I anticipate my usual Friday experience to take place today instead so I guess everything will be okay. It’s good to have today because I need a little time to get a few lessons ready to start our new unit. Since today is Columbus Day, I think I may delay the start of the science unit by having a little one-day Columbus lesson tomorrow. Then I’ll be gone on Wednesday with the third grade field trip and Friday will be computer day so that leaves Thursday. Surely I can think of one science-related activity for one day!
As I told you last night, I think I'll wait to tell the children about the new car when I actually have it. Since I know they will want to see it, I'll wait until I can drive it to school and then I'll take them out to show it to them. If they are extra special nice, I might even let them sit in it!
It’s another warm, muggy morning. It’s supposed to rain tomorrow and then be nice on Wednesday. I sincerely hope the forecast is right because of the Wednesday field trip. Other than that, I don’t have anything to think about—just the weather! So I’ll go now, look in my closet for something to wear that is cool but doesn’t look summery—dressing this time of year is always a challenge. Hope you all have an okay day and that things settle down for your apartment building.

football day
Dear Daughter,
I am so thrilled that you and Stan have a Crown Victoria. I can hardly wait to see it. I think you said that it had eight cylinders, so it will go fast, if you need it to.
The football games - Auburn won over Arkansas, and we were sorry about that. Daddy is now watching the baseball game, NY vs Boston is tied in about the third inning. He said he heard on TV that Ole Miss was ahead of Arkansas State.
I went to the Grocery this morning, as I told you, and I haven't been out since. I don't think that I will go out this afternoon or tonight. I'm crocheting the Baby Squares Afghan. Of course, I knew how to crochet it, but putting it all together will be fun!
Harry has a meeting October 19 through 22, and then they will go home on the 23rd. It is at Cross Plains, 40 miles north of Nashville toward Clarksville. They are coming on the 18th about the middle of the afternoon, and will stay a short while before going to their motel at the place Harry will hold the meeting.
So, that's about all the news that I have - we are enjoying the day -
Hope you have a good evening, and I'm sure you are glad to be home -
Much love, M & D

Dear Mother:
How are you all this afternoon? Did you get plenty of rest? You made a good decision not to go to the grocery. You can go tomorrow and I imagine it won’t make much difference. I took a nap this afternoon and feel drowsy and groggy but better for having rested some. I wish I had another day off but it will be back to work as usual in the morning!
As for telling the children about the car, I think I’ll wait until I actually have it and then we may walk out there and look at it. It had completely slipped both our minds that tomorrow is a holiday so no mail and no bank which means we can’t deposit our check until Tuesday. Stan is going to take care of depositing the check and then going out to finish the paperwork on Tuesday. If all goes as planned, we will get the car on Tuesday afternoon when I get off from work. If for some reason that doesn’t work out, it would be Thursday before we got the car because I will be gone morning to night on Wednesday on a field trip with the third graders. But maybe everything will fall into place and work out the way we planned. It’s pitiful when you’re so busy that you can’t find time to go pick up a new car!
Fortunately, that’s about all I know. I did manage to unpack my suitcase and to sort through all the stuff I got at the gifted conference. Stan has watched various sports shows all afternoon (at least one Tennessee team managed to win this weekend!) so he hasn’t done much either. So, I hope all went well at church this evening and that you have a nice rest of the evening.

Bye--Ruth
