staying up late

Dear Daughter,

So glad you called a few moments ago. Glad you made the trip okay, in your new car.

We went to lunch, and both of us had Catfish, and the vegetables that went with it. Then I left shortly after we got back to our apartment. First I stopped at the bank, then I went to the Beauty Shop and had my hair done by Sue, the manager of the Beauty Shop. It looks okay. At least I have that done, so I won't have to worry about having it done.

Mary Clark came home some time today. When we were coming back from lunch, on the elevator B. J. told us that she is going to stay with Mary Clark all the time that she needs her. I think that is so nice, because she is a good cook, etc. I have no idea what she charges for sitting with a patient, but I don't think it would be much.

We are going to watch a movie tonight. I don't know which one, but we will probably watch A&E, Poirot, in some kind of movie.

Tomorrow I will write sometime in the afternoon. I'm not sure what time they are coming, but Harry said it should be about 5:00 when they got here. Of course, Daddy and I are going to eat lunch, but I have no idea where we will eat tomorrow night. We will tell you when we talk to you on Sunday.

Love you, and hope you get a good night's rest -

Much love, M & D

Dear Mother:

While I hadn't really intended to write you this morning, I am sitting here roaming around the internet on my laptop in my hotel room so I thought the least I could do was to say hi. So--Hi! How are you all this morning? How's the weather? It's surprisingly cool and cloudy here but that's fine with me. I enjoy autumnal weather and, if it stays cloudy, it will be nice to drive home without the sun heating up the car--not that my air conditioner doesn't work perfectly in my NEW Crown Victoria!

I stayed up dreadfully late last night after getting back to my hotel room about 9:30. Our meeting lasted 3 hours and I think we got everything done but, when I got back to my room, I was tired but still very much awake. Stan and I had a nice long Yahoo chat, typing back and forth as fast as we could. Then I watched a movie, "One Fine Day," took a long, hot bath and read my book. I just piddled around until, before I knew it, it was 12:30. I had intended to sleep later than 8:30 this morning but the people across the hall decided to stand out in the hall talking loudly while opening and closing their door multiple times so I finally decided to get up. I have been downstairs to have a nice hot bacon and egg breakfast and now I'm going to hang around my room for awhile drinking coffee before checking out in about 30 minutes or so. I'm going to shop just briefly here in Jackson (mostly at Sam's) and then head home.

Hope you all have a good time with Maggie and Gary.

Bye--Ruth

off to Jackson again

Dear Daughter,

I noticed on TV this morning, that most of the rain is going to the south of us. Like Murfreesbo, Tullahoma, etc., so that is good. It is raining nw, but not very hard.

I had already thought that we would go down to cafeteria, at the usual time, and then I could take my time, but probably go to the Beauty Shop this afternoon, so you and I had the same thought.

I know every thing's will be right in Jackson. I had thought too about the traffic being heavy when you get there, but, as you say, you will have to get accustomed to driving in traffic, so I guess you might as well go slow, I know you do, and be careful.

I don't plan to do anything else, except the Beauty Shop and to eat. When they finish with doing my hair, I might go to Hecht's and look at suits. Daddy told me last night to get my gift and have it wrapped. I asked him what he wanted, and he said some gold toe socks. I told him he could get a new suit, but, he says he has 18 in his closet, so there is no need to get him anything else unless he tells us to. I want to get for you something else rather than your suit, so you be thinking about it.

Today, I'm going to make two pecan pies, one for Church Sunday night, and the other for Rita and Harry, when they come on Saturday night, about 6:00 PM. I really don't think they will eat with us because when they get here, they will have to go pretty soon to Cross Plains, which is forty miles from Nashville, because, Rita said they might have to eat Saturday night with a man where Harry is going to preach, so I really don't know, but I guess we will find it all out.

Daddy is sleeping away. Incidentally, did you know that NYbeat Boston last night? I know you were probably for Boston, but, as you know, NY has always been our team.

Ole Miss plays tomorrow in Oxford, don't know the time. UT plays Alabama at 2:30, NY plays baseball tomorrow night, so we just have all sorts of things to do tomorrow.

Be careful!!

TGIF -

Much love, M & D

Dear Mother:

Thanks for your note last night telling me that your meat had arrived. I promise to make the whole process work better if you want to order anything from them again. I’ll order from the internet while we are there or I can do it from home. Either way will work and I can charge it on my credit card and you can give me a check which will make the whole process go many times faster. As for your going somewhere, it looks like it will be rainy today so I think you won’t be able to go to the beauty shop yet again. Maybe right after lunch you can go since I think the rain is moving through fairly rapidly. Thunder woke me up a couple of times during the night and when I woke, I heard plenty of rain coming down. It seems to be past us now, however, so maybe it will pass through Nashville by mid morning.

It may be Friday but it’s not quite the end of my week since I have to go to Jackson this afternoon. I spent all of last evening getting my papers and handouts ready for this meeting. While it’s not exactly a workshop I’m giving, another woman and I are training some people who will be helping us with our teacher exam workshops this year. So I’ll be doing the reading and writing training and she’ll do the math training. We were both supposed to have packets of material ready so they could be given out to the trainees. Well, I finally got all my stuff ready and faxed it to the MAE office about 9:00 last night so they should be able to duplicate it and have it ready by tonight. Having done that and washed my hair, I still had to pack but eventually I got it all done. Whew! I’ll be happy to be quiet and peaceful in my car this afternoon. That’s another reason I’m looking forward to this afternoon—my car! I think I’ll really enjoy driving to Jackson in my new car although I’m a little nervous about all the traffic in Jackson in a new, larger car. Well, I’ll have to get used to driving the Crown Vic in Jackson sooner or later since I go there so often and I guess it might as well be sooner.

This is computer day so I believe and hope that it won’t be too stressful. I’m going to leave school as soon as I possibly can so I can get to Jackson in time for my 6:30 meeting. I’ll give you a brief call to let you know I’m there but I’ll be going straight to my meeting so it will be a brief call. Hope you all have a good evening with Rita and Harry!

Mary Ellen revisited

Dear Daughter,

The reason I'm not doing some things to tell you the truth, is because I dread to. I don't know why, but that is the way it is. So now I think I will go tomorrow, maybe. I wish I could fix my hair but I can't, so guess I will have to live with it.

It's a beautiful day, with a high temperature 66, I think.

You wrote such a pretty, long letter, and do appreciate it so much. Mary Ellen. Isn't she a problem student!!!

Church was fine last night. We stayed in the auditorium, because Bro. Richards taught the auditorium, so enjoyed not having to go to the Library.

Sunday night is our visitation committee, so Agnes said she
would bring us home, as usual.

We are not eating today from the cafeteria. Our meat was supposed to be delivered, from Omaha, but it hasn't been delivered yet. It was supposed to be delivered yesterday, but we never heard about it. Slow, slow -

So, I hope you have a good day. At least, in going to the Central office, you will have a lot of people to learn the thing about reading. Of course, you are to be the guinea pig. I'm sure it's because you are the head of the children. Good luck.

I didn't get up this morning until 7:10. The alarm was buzzing, but I was so sleepy that I didn't even hear it.

Hope everything goes right with you -

Much love, M & D

Dear Mother:

If you wondered why my letter was so short last night, it was because Buddy called and so, while talking to him, I tried to add a couple of concluding sentences so I could go ahead and send the letter. I suspected that I’d be on the phone quite a long time so I didn’t want to wait until I finished talking to Buddy to finish my letter. Considering that we talked well over an hour, it’s a good thing I went ahead and sent a short letter rather than wait to write a longer letter. Buddy was very talkative last night and, in fact, he was so talkative that I finally had to tell him I had to go. It’s a pity to terminate a conversation with your child but after an hour and fifteen minutes, I really had to go. He was chattering on about things at work (this course he’s taking) and how he hired an interior decorator to come look at his apartment and suggest window treatments which are going to be custom-made and about his appointment with a diamond merchant today to look at possible rings for Anna (I hope I’m not "telling secrets out of school" so don’t mention this to him). He just went on and on about places he and Anna had been, parties they’d attended, restaurants they’d been to, blah, blah, blah. He was all wound up and it was hard to stop him!! But anyway, that was why my letter was so short.

Before I tell you about today, I’ll tell you a couple of things about the field trip that I meant to tell you last night. Actually, it’s just one thing—Mary Elizabeth….. As teacher, I got to sit in the front seat of the bus (Gretchen across the aisle in the other front seat) so I settled in thinking I could read my book and have a moderately entertaining time on the 2-hour drive but NO! Here comes Mary Ellen who sits down beside me. I tried to convince her she’d have more fun back with the other kids but she declared that she would only sit with me. Then I told her I planned to read my book and wouldn’t talk to her but she said that was fine, that she wouldn’t bother me. To giver her credit where credit is due, she didn’t talk. She sat and stared straight out the window for a very long time and then she curled up and went to sleep so I did get to read my book. Once we got to Crow’s Neck Center, she was in my group so I spent the rest of the day in her company. I have to say that I’ve rarely seen a child who knows so little about getting along with other children. All day long there was the constant refrain of "Mary Ellen, don’t DO that!" or "Mary Ellen, try to help us." And for the most part, these admonitions came from the other kids rather than from me. We spent the morning doing a "Cooperation Course" where the naturalists at the Center took the kids out in the woods to teach them how to depend on and trust each other when dealing with problems out in nature (getting lost, getting across a gully or stream, etc.) and the object of the experience was to get the group to figure out a solution that would require everyone’s efforts and help everyone to achieve the goal. Mary Ellen was often obstructionist and always complaining. She needs major social skills help. Anyway, I ended the day being very grateful that she isn’t in my class this year! Oh, by the way, she sat with me at lunch and shadowed me all day so I got a full dose of Mary Ellen!

Very briefly I’ll tell you that today will again be sort of topsy turvy. I’ll have my 3rd grade class this morning (for 2 hours) but then will not have any of my 2nd graders because I have to go to the high school to learn how to use a new teacher website program for the school district. Gretchen and I are both going along with about 10 other teachers who have plenty of computer skills. We are the guinea pigs for the new program so the tech people are going to teach us first. I wouldn’t mind doing this but I wish it weren’t today since my 2nd graders are going to be furious with me for missing Gateway again! Well, there’s nothing I can do so I guess I’ll try to have a good attitude.

Now that’s all I have to say and all I have time to say! How’s your cafeteria doing? Are you going to go to the beauty shop? Have you not gone to the beauty shop because you feel bad? Tell me how things are up there!

Bye--Ruth

back from the woods

Dear Daughter,

This has been a good day. We are looking for our Omaha steaks. You wrote the check on October 5, and today I called them, and the guy said they were on a Express Van and would be here sometime this afternoon. They still haven't come, but I guess they will be here soon. It seems that it took quite a time for them to be delivered.

I went to the Pharmacy this afternoon, and, bought our medicine, and did some shopping. I didn't go to the mall, but went to Shoe Store, that is on the same block as Fantastic Sam's Beauty Shop on Bandywood. I bought a purse for .25 at our Flea market, and I took it to the Shoe Shop to have it repaired. They couldn't but, told me if I wanted it fixed badly enough that I could go to the Internet, get their phone number, and call and asked them about it. i thought I would ask you to get the information on the Computer, and I could ship to them, and they could fix it. I know you think that it isn't worth it, but it is a pretty purse - we'll talk about it when you come.

Daddy is asleep, but I will get him up around 5:00 for the news.

That's about all the news here.

Hope you had a nice field trip for the children -

Have a good evening -

Much love, M & D

Dear Mother:

The report on the field trip, I’m happy to say, is a good one. I’m totally, completely exhausted but I’m relieved that all went well and that we comported ourselves well. We were late leaving school (8:15) so we were about 10 minutes late but that didn’t seem to be a problem. We had a short orientation, split into groups, and then headed into the woods. We hiked up and down hills and then spent 2 hours doing survival/cooperation games so I was ready to go back to the lodge for lunch at noon. The lunch was fine (hamburgers) and we had to clean up everything ourselves before going back out to the woods. So, the weather was beautiful, the kids were nice, the group leaders did a good job BUT I was ready to come home.

We got back to school at 5:15 and I was home by 5:30. Stan got home at 6:00 and we just fixed our own dinners. So I’m ready to go take a nice long shower. Hope church went well and that you all are feeling well. Good night.

a field trip in the offing

Dear Daughter,

It is going to be 64 today, and the sky is beautiful. It's cool and crisp, and that makes good weather.

It is going to be a pretty day for your field trip. I know you and Gretchen will enjoy it, or I hope you do, so have a good day, if you can, and I'm sure you will.

I'm not going to the Beauty Parlor today, but will wait until Friday. I guess they can stand my hair at Church tonight, or I hope they can. I will go down and get our lunch today. You know, this is one of Daddy's days when he can't go any place, but that's okay, tomorrow should be a good day for him.

I have all my dresses and skirts hemmed, so all I have to do is sit and crochet. It is fun to do the squares. I want make for YOU a ripple afghan. Be thinking what colors you want.

I have to go the Pharmacy today to get medicine for both of us, so that will be my walking, I guess.

Rita and Harry will not get here until about 6:00 Saturday night. She said she is not sure if she will eat or not, because Harry speaks at Dyersburg and it is not over until 12 Noon. But Harry has told her that she could come to our house one day next week, and could spend some time with us. I am sure that we will go shopping, not buying, just looking. Then, we can have lunch in the cafeteria!

Have a good time on the field trip. Buddy called last night, and he is taking a course about Managing, I think. Said it would be over this week. He is fine. I love to hear about his apartment in Jersey.

I want to see you in the car, alone, and, if you don't mind, bring your camera with you, and we will take pictures. Won't that be fun.

Much love, M & D

**************************************************************

Dear Mother:

This is going to be another big day for me so let me tell you what I’m going to do before I rush off to school early. It’s a cool—well chilly, really—morning but it isn’t raining nor does it promise to rain so that’s a big relief. So what are we doing today? Well, I only have 7 third-grade students so I don’t have a big bunch to look after but Gretchen has 44 kids (her 3rd and 4th graders) so she has a much larger bunch to manage. She has parents, of course, to help but it’s a much larger responsibility than I have. I made all the arrangements for the field trip but Gretchen will have most of the responsibility today. So, while I’m always very nervous about field trips, at least I don’t have to worry about a huge group—just my little group of 7 so I think we’ll have a pretty good time.

We are going to a place called Crow’s Neck Environmental Education Center. It’s an "outdoor classroom" managed by Itawamba Junior College (i.e. managed by the State of Mississippi) which is dedicated to teaching the children of Mississippi about indigenous flora and fauna and how to care for them. They have an education staff which will lead the sessions so all Gretchen, her parent chaperones, and I just tag along and keep the kids in order while the staff presents the program. We will spend the whole day outdoors (except for our lunch in their cafeteria) which is probably not my favorite thing to do but I think the kids will enjoy it a lot. We leave at 8:00 a.m. this morning and arrive back at school at 5:00 so it will be a long day but then Gretchen and I will not have to worry about any other field trips for the year (except the 3rd grade picnic at my house in the spring) so that will be a relief.

It sounds like you all need something good to happen in your building soon. I’m sure this is just a little bad patch and that things will settle down soon. People in Green Hills will be as anxious to have your cafeteria re-open as you will so I’m sure they are working hard to get the kitchen problems fixed. At least next weekend you all can go out to eat when we’re there and maybe Rita and Harry can take you someplace in Green Hills (Mozzarella’s???) when they are there. Try not to worry about things and to have a good day. And think about getting to ride in my snazzy new car soon! That’s what I’m thinking about right now!

Bye--Ruth
