fresh veggies

Dear Daughter,

We had talk with Buddy last night. And, I did get your letter. I guess it got lost in TV land, but it did come to me, and I appreciate your having to send it again.

Buddy had a ring on his mind. He said he, of course, would pay a lot for it, but he couldn't decide on what kind, etc. he said this was the only time in his life when he would buy a ring, and he wants Anna to be proud of, as I'm sure she will be. We talked about 45 minutes, and he said he guessed he had better get to bed.

Daddy didn't go down with me. He said for me to tell the "girls" that Rita and Harry took us to Olive Garden, and he had better stay home and rest. I sat by Lacey Love, and she asked me about Daddy. When I walked in, Doris, Chairman of the House Committee, said that they would begin, since I was there. I didn't know how important I was (ha)!! I used to win almost every time we played, but now I almost win, but not quite good enough. Doris asked us to vote on when we would have it, Saturday afternoon, Sunday afternoon or Tuesday night. We all voted Tuesday, so that is when we will play. It is "set" for Tuesday, the third Tuesday in the month.

We have so much food to eat. We have fresh peas, that Rita brought to us. We have zucchini, fresh turnip greens, sweet potatoes, just dug from the ground, four boxes of cake mixes, to make cakes that the Weight Watchers use, which are, as a matter of fact, very good. So, anyway, we will eat here today, then on Friday, when we have catfish, we will eat in the cafeteria.

I plan to go to Church tonight, so I'll write you at 4:00 instead of 5:00.

Hope you get a good haircut -

I think the children will behave today(???)

We love you -

Love, M & D

Dear Mother:

Good morning. I trust you got my letter last night although I can’t imagine what happened to the one I sent at 7:00. Well, we have had these email mysteries before and we will continue to have them in the future, I’m sure.

Did you have fun at bingo? Do lots of people come? What kind of presents do people win and, not to be nosy, but do you ever win? I’m sure you don’t care whether or not you really win since you are mostly just going for a fun time but I’m sure, also, that you wouldn’t mind if you won occasionally! Did you talk to Buddy? I hope that he was doing well and I hope that you’ll tell me anything interesting that he said.

Other than getting a haircut this afternoon, there’s nothing much interesting going on today. There are more experiments in the offing for the second graders but I don’t have the third graders on Wednesday so I don’t have to worry about preparing for them today. I will have all of my second grade classes, however, so after a day of doing somewhat messy experiments, I would predict that I’d be a little bit tired at the end of the day. But the second graders seem to be enjoying their unit (which they should since they thought it up and voted to do it) so it’s worth the effort as long as they are trying hard and learning something.

Well, as I said, I do have a haircut appointment at 4:30 this afternoon which is late but all that was available. I think we will probably not eat out this evening since we are going out tomorrow evening and then, of course, we’ll be eating out this weekend. You’ll be going to church, I assume, won’t you, Mother? Hope you all have a good day and that you both recover from all that running around you did yesterday!

Bye--Ruth

going out to eat

Dear Daughter,

Rita called about 8:00 this morning, and said they were coming here at 10:30 and were going to take us to the Olive Garden. She said Harry really loved the Olive Garden, and, I do, too. I don't think Daddy likes it too well, but he is just glad to get out.

I told Rita that we would pay for it, and she said she had a certain way with waiters. So they are going to pay. Harry has to get back to Dyersburg. They came on the way, so they have to get going as soon as we eat.

Guess what? On our bulletin board is two or three copies ofthe memos sent by Dot that, unless we help her out by beginning to work more, that she will have to close the doors, and if the door is locked, we cannot receive our mail. So, I went down to talk with her as soon as I read the memos. She sad every word of her memos was true. I told her that I could work two hours every other week on any night except Sunday night and Wednesday night. So, I'm going to work Thursday nights from 4 to 6, which isn't bad at all.

I don't think Daddy will go to play bingo with me tonight. I wish he felt like it, but I don't think he will after going out to eat. But he is still okay, but, of course, tires very easily.

Love, M &D

Dear Mother:

What a busy day you all had! I can’t believe you went to the Olive Garden but I know it was a big treat. I agree, however, that it’s quite a distance and that you REALLY have to want to go that far to make it worth it. I know, also, that you wish Rita and Harry would let you pay. Even if they did sell their house, I’m sure they don’t have that much extra cash floating around. Maybe next time you all can tell them that you refuse to go unless they let you pay!

Your comment about Dot was rather strange. I can understand partially that you might need someone sitting on the desk during the day but, frankly, I don’t see what sitting on the desk at night has to do with mail delivery. Moreover, we lived (and the boys have lived) in buildings that were locked day and night. Postmen are given a key to get in since they are considered reliable people. I just think she was either making that up or that she doesn’t understand how apartment buildings work. I imagine you will enjoy sitting on the desk but I don’t think that it will or should influence the delivery of mail. The more I hear about Dot, the less I think she is really competent to manage an apartment building, if you don’t mind my saying so.

The experiments with the second graders went well. My schedule has changed so I only have one second grade class on Tuesday. That means that the experiments that I did with one class today will be repeated with the other two classes tomorrow. This was my rambunctious second grade class so the fact that the experiments went pretty well encourages me to think that things will go really well tomorrow with my two better classes. Fortunately, it was a beautiful day so our messy, watery experiments were fun to do outdoors. I’m actually looking forward to doing these experiments over again tomorrow with the “good” classes.

Stan and I went out to eat at the Mexican restaurant since it was after 5:00 when I got home. I stayed at school to work on reading fair stuff and lesson plans and my teacher website. After I left school, I went to the Dollar Store to get some supplies for school so I was really late getting home. I hope you had a good time at bingo and I hope you both enjoy talking to Buddy. I had a nice Yahoo chat on the computer with him today so I don’t feel left out anymore! Enjoy the rest of your evening.

grocery list

Dear Daughter,

I got up a little late this morning. I think, from last night's weather report that it's going to be cloudy most of the day.

Had a note from Buddy, saying, after I wrote him a brief note from me, that we were playing bingo tonight, from 7 to 8. So I had a note back from him that he would call us after the bingo game to talk. We are so happy to talk with him.

Phil called last night, and we had nice conversation. He is fine, and he said Marla was in bed. She had come home, after her work, had stayed in the bed, fixed dinner, then went back to bed. He said it won't be long before Baby comes!

I certainly don't plan to out today. We will eat lunch in the cafeteria, see Charlie, when he comes to announce the bugman, and see Rita and Harry briefly, I'm sure, and then just sit at the TV and crochet. I'm, really enjoying the little squares. How did you ever influence me to crochet again? But I'm so happy you did.

Daddy is fine. He just weighs 145, but he seems to be doing very well, and I can't tell you how happy that makes me.

Here are the groceries I want you to bring, and it's kind of you to do it:

About 12 rolls of Angel soft bathroom tissue
Paper towels, Bounty
2 gallons of distilled water for the oxygen tank
5 cartons of Mountain Dew
1 carton of vanilla coke, like you were drinking

Thank you so much for all you have done for us!!

Hope the children behave today -

love you, M & D

Dear Mother:

After last week with its messed up schedule and cancelled classe and after a weekend followed by a conference day, we will have students again today. It will be something of a small jolt to get back into the swing of having classes but it had to happen sometime.

What is there to say about an evening that only lasted 2 hours? I got home at 7:15 and was in bed by 9:00 so there wasn’t much time to do anything. Stan was talking to his mother when I got home so it was 7:30 before I even got to say hello to him. As you can tell, that made for a very short evening so I didn’t do much except chat with Stan a bit, take a shower, and assemble a few things for school. The second graders voted to have "Science Experiments" as their unit for the next several weeks so we are doing science experiments—imagine that! I’m trying to get all these experiments organized into conceptual groups so that they make sense as we do them. The experiments we’ll do today will focus on air pressure vs. water pressure. Which is stronger? I fear that it will be a messy day so we’ll do several of the experiments outside.

Not much else is going on here. I have not talked to Buddy in over a week and I told you about my conversation with Phil on Saturday (while I was driving home) so there’s no news on those fronts. I know that lots will be happening over the next several weeks so I’m not all that anxious to spend lots of time on the phone. I figure that in about a month, I’ll have plenty of time to talk to both boys!

Well, sorry to be so boring but I haven’t done much over the last day or so. Maybe I’ll be able to relate some exciting events from our day at school. Hope you all have a good day, too. Enjoy your brief visit with Rita and Harry and enjoy the lovely weather.

flu shots

Dear Daughter,

Hasn't this been such a gorgeous day? I know you don't get out much, out of the classroom, but I hope you have a pretty view of the weather!

We went down at 8:20 to get our flu shots. We were the first ones in the parlor for our shots, so I got the first flu shot, and, it didn't hurt at all, so I'm glad that is over. I was happy to hear you say that Stan was going to get his shot.

This afternoon I went to Walgreen's to get Daddy some ointment to put on his hands. Then I stopped at Kroger's t get some medicine for him. and two or three other items at the grocery.

Daddy was sitting in his chair in the living room, and I asked him if he had a message for the Daughter, and he said to tell you that it is a fact that he loves you!

The Bugman comes tomorrow. Also, Rita and Harry are coming for a short time. They are having a good meeting, but it is only forty miles and they said they would come for a short while.

We love you!

Love, M & D

Dear Mother:

Since I have to stay at school until 7:00, I'm obviously still here. So far I have had 5 parents come by and all the conferences have been pleasant ones so I guess I can only complain about the fact that I'd rather be home by now. Still, having gotten to sleep late and having had a nice morning at home, I guess I came out on top as far as today's schedule goes.

It was a pretty day, wasn't it? I had my lunch sitting on the porch while reading a book. That's the height of luxury as far as I'm concerned. I really do enjoy having just a little bit of time by myself at home since it's so rare. But nothing much has been going on today. I got up, piddled around, washed my hair, paid some bills, read, ate lunch, and came to school. Since getting to school, I've had those few conferences, worked hard and long on the reading fair registrations which I typed, duplicated, and distributed to teachers. That took two hours or more so that's been the main job of the day. I've also been working on my new science unit which I certainly don't have finished but I do have some lessons prepared for the next couple of days.

I'm glad you got your flu shot. Did Daddy get one, too? I hope you both feel okay as a result and that you don't have any reactions to your shots. Have a good rest of the evening.

no kids on Monday

Dear Daughter,

It is going to be a beautiful day. It won't be long , but enjoy it while it is here.

I just had a lovely time last night. The preaching was fine. I like the new preacher a lot better than I did at first.

We had 25 people at the Visitation last night, and, as usual, the food was just fine. They don't ask me anymore what I brought, they say that I brought a pecan pie. Annie and I are going to be co-hostesses for July, next year.

Jane Blake called me Saturday night, about 7:30, and we talked until 8:30. Mary Margaret is better. They are not doing anything for her now. They say every organ is perfect, and they cannot find any thing wrong with her. So she was supposed to fly out yesterday to her job, don't know where, but she is going to stay until Friday afternoon, then fly home. The doctors say she has some sort of spasm just below her appendix, sometimes, and that is what makes her sick all over. She told Jane that while she was working, if she got sick, she would lie down on the floor! She and Howard have put the down payment on a new (for them) house in Boston.

Daddy and I are going down to have a flu shot this morning at 9:00 this morning, although it will be about 8:30 when we go, to avoid the line of waiting.

Hope you have a good day. Every day should be a good day for an intelligent, beautiful teacher!

Glad you didn't have to get up so early this morning.

Will write you tonight -

Much love, M & D

****************************************************

Dear Mother:

You probably won’t read this until you get back from your flu shot so I’m sorry I’m a little late but I guess better late than never, eh? Are they giving flu shots in your building? I remember your telling me something about that but I can’t quite remember what you said. But surely it’s there in the building or Daddy wouldn’t be going. Stan tried to get his flu shot on campus last week but they said they didn’t have the vaccine in yet so it will be another couple of weeks, I guess, before he can get one.

It’s very nice to have a Monday morning at home, even though I’ll have to stay at work until 7:00 p.m. to "earn" that time off. Still, I very much enjoyed having another morning to catch up on my sleep and I’m sure I’ll feel better this week because of it. In fact, I would be happy to have a similar schedule forever if it meant I could stay up later than 9:00 and get up later than 5:30. I know you all remember those days and probably don’t miss them at all!

The concept of the schedule that we are following today is that it’s hard for working parents to come to school for a conference during school hours so we are working from 12:00 to 7:00 on the assumption that some parents can come at their lunch hour and some can come after they finish work which can be from 4:00 (for factory to workers) to 4:45 (for the University) to after 5:00 for other jobs. We handed out report cards last Thursday so that’s why we are having conference day now—so parents can discuss report cards with teachers. Fortunately, since I don’t give grades, I don’t have many parents wanting to discuss anything serious. The most I had last year was just a parent stopping by to say hello and ask if little Johnny was behaving and could they do anything to help. So I don’t anticipate a very strenuous day. I plan, actually, to work hard on getting my new second grade science unit put together.

So that’s about it. I hope the flu shots don’t make you sick and I hope that things are settling down in your building. Try not to worry—everything will be fine eventually, I’m sure.

Bye--Ruth
